NEW ZEALAND | Honeymoon Crashing Day

Te Anau, Südinsel. Im Sommer kam meine Mama und sagte zu mir „Isi hat Neuseeland gebucht. Melde dich mal bei ihr. Ich glaube, ihr fliegt zeitgleich da hin!“ Zur Anmerkungen: Isi, ihres Zeichen meine Cousine, hatte / hat vor, ihre Hochzeitsreise in Neuseeland zu verbringen. Nach kurzer Absprache war klar: wir sind zeitgleich da. WTF?! Was für Zufälle gibt es denn?! Familie ist überall. Ein bisschen Planung bedurfte es, damit wir einen gemeinsamen Ausflug unternehmen können und nicht uns nur auf der Strecke abklatschen, aber nun war es soweit: Milford Sound, mein vorher ausgemachtes Highlight der Südinsel.

Bei strahlendem Sonnenschein ging es los. Entlang der Strecke mit mehreren Stopps für Fotos, kleinere Erkundungstouren, … ziemlich nett, wenn auch klein, waren die Mirror Lakes (für meine VW Kollegen: für mich waren sie immer „Mirror Link“ 🤦🏻‍♀️ man nimmt die Arbeit eben doch überall mit hin). Eine einzige Straße führt zum Milford Sound, die auch nicht so überlaufen war. Kleiner Tipp für die, die noch hier herfahren: wir haben die Nachmittags-Tour gebucht. (Unbedingt vorher buchen!!) Die ganzen Bus- und Automassen starten in der Früh zum Sound, um die Morgens- und Mittags-Tour zu nehmen. Die sind jedoch teurer und überlaufender. Nachmittags ist es günstiger und ruhiger – überall. Auf den Straßen und dort vor Ort. Der Parkplatz-Shuttlebus Fahrer bestätige dies auch (nehmt den ersten Parkplatz am Airport, der ist kostenlos und hat einen Shuttlebus, der euch in 5Min zum Sound bringt oder ihr lauft 15 min selber dahin). Der erzählte uns im übrigen, dass er hier in Milford lebt. Mitten im nirgendwo, 200 Einwohner. Er zeigte uns dann Downtown Milford. Downtown. Bei einer Stadt mit 200 Einwohnern. Ja nee, is klar. Außer das Café, was um 18 Uhr geschlossen hat, hab ich nicht mal groß Häuser gesehen. Wo leben die denn?! Im Wald?

Wir waren zeitig dran, hatten also genügend Zeit für Bilder, Picknick und ein bissi Entspannung bis es endlich los ging. Und was soll ich sagen: es war traumhaft. Nicht nur, dass wir Sonnenschein hatten, wir haben auf der 3h Tour Pinguine, Delfine und Seelöwen gesehen. Selbst der Guide meinte zu uns, dass sei nicht normal und hat selbst die Kamera gezückt. Obwohl es echt windig war, war es wohl ein normaler Tag: 50kmh. Es gibt auch Tage mit bis zu 300kmh. Und Tage mit viel Regen. Im Jahr fallen da 9.000mm (!!!!) Regen. Im Vgl.: Deutschland liegt so bei 800mm.

Der Sound, geformt aus einem Gletscher vor Urzeiten, ist einfach unfassbar schön. Man konnte nicht genug Bilder machen. Das kann man auch gar nicht beschreiben, daher findet ihr genügend Bildmaterial beigefügt. Frau Ambrosius, mein geliebte Geo-Lehrerin, hätte ihre wahre Freude hier gehabt.

„fun fact“: am Folgetag sollte es wieder so regnen, dass wohl die Straße zum Sound gesperrt werden sollte. Schade, für die Besucher. Und wir hatten einfach unfassbares Glück.

Te Anau, South Island. By mid of summer my mom told me „Isi booked her trip to New Zealand. Talk to her. I think you‘re gonna be there at about the same time.“ Just as a remark: Isi is my cousin. She wanted / wants to spend her honeymoon in New Zealand. After a short chat was clear: we will be in New Zealand at the exact same time. WTF?! What a coincidence! Family is everywhere. It needed a bit of a detailed planning to really meat each other and not to just clap hands on the streets but we made it. And now, we are about to go to Milford Sound, probably my highlight of the South Island.

With blue sky and pure sunshine we startet our trip. Of cause with several stops along the way for photos, little hikes, … Quite nice had the Mirror Lakes been (for me always „Mirror Link“ – quite known to my VW colleagues. You take your job everywhere). Only one single street takes you to Milford Sound. Just as a recommendation for those who are about to travel to NZ: take the afternoon boat tour. (Book it in advance!!) The street is not crowded because most of the cars and all of the buses taking the morning or lunch cruise. The streets and the Harbour itself is less crowded in the afternoon. The tour is cheaper as well. The shuttle driver of the parking lot confirmed our good strategy as well (take the first parking lot at the airport – this is for free and has a regular shuttle bus that takes you within 5 min to the Harbour. You can walk as well – 15 min). By the way, this guy also told us he is living in this 200 people village. Somewhere in the nowhere. And he showed us downtown Milford. Downtown. A city with 200 inhabitants has a downtown. Sure. Are you kidding me? The cafe over there closes at 6 pm, other house you barley haven’t seen. Where are those people living? In the woods?!

We had been quite early so we took our time for pictures, doing a little picnic and relaxed a bit until the tour started. And what shall I say? It had been amazing! Not only, we had a blue sky, we saw at our 3h trip penguins, dolphins and sea lions. Even our guide was totally surprised and took some pictures. Obviously not normal. Although it was really windy the conditions had been normal: 50kmh. There are days with 300kmh. And days with rain. Lots of rain. On average over the year 9.000mm (!!!). Germany has as a comparison 800mm.

The sound, formed by a glacier ages and ages ago, is simply beautiful. Unbelievable beautiful. We could not got enough from this view and took pictures as hell. You cannot describe it. You‘ll find enough pictures below. Mrs Ambrosius, my former geography teacher, probably would have gone crazy about this.

„Fun Fact“: heavy rain occurred on the following day that they where about to close the road to the sound (that’s what my cousin heard from the guy of the hotel.) We got so lucky! Sad thing for all the visitors on that day.
